Bariatric Surgery – Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric Surgery is also known as weight loss surgery. It is performed on people who suffer from obesity. Obesity is a serious medical condition and has adverse health effect on the body. When Bariatric Surgery is indicated?

Surgery is indicated:

  • In patients with BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater. BMI is an approximate measure of a person’s body fat based on height and weight.
  • In patients suffering with obesity-related medical conditions. Eg: Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc

Types of Bariatric Surgery

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

In Sleeve Gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced to about 15% of the original size of the stomach. This reduced food intake. The portion of the stomach which secretes the “hunger hormone ” or Ghrelin is the part which is removed.

Gastric Bypass – Roux-en-Y

In Gastric Bypass or Roux-en-Y, the stomach is divided into two. A small upper pouch and a large lower pouch. The small intestine is then reattached to the upper pouch. Thus a bypass for food is created. This results in absorption of less calories and nutrients.

Intragastric Balloon – Non-surgical Weight Loss Procedure

This is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. A deflated balloon is placed into the stomach using an endoscope orally. The balloon is then inflated. This reduces the space in the stomach. Thus due to the presence of the inflated balloon in the stomach, food intake is restricted. The balloon is left in the stomach for a period of up to 6 months. This procedure is mostly advised in people who come into the category of overweight, but not obese.

Weight Loss after Weight Loss Surgery

Weight before surgery :98Kg

I felt blessed  when I heard about Dr. Padmakumar as I was struggling with overweight and difficult to carry out my day to day activities.  I was also having trouble to breathe properly and my heart rate was also running very high (116-118).  After my surgery my BP, my heart rate and breathing problem become Okay, I lost almost 7Kg within a week of my surgery. I had a comfortable post operative period and very good experience with Dr.Padmakumar’s team.  I take this opportunity to thank everyone in his team for my recovery.  I would recommend everyone whom I will come across who struggles with the same problem to contact this clinic
