Obesity – Why should Obesity be treated?

Obesity is a medical condition where there is accumulation of excess body fat. Carrying excess weight or body fat can have negative effect on health. Dealing with obesity is not just about losing weight, it is about gaining health.
What are the causes of Obesity?

Obesity is a complicated disease and has more than one cause. It is often the result of having high intake of calories, particularly those in fatty and sugary foods, and less burning of these calories by exercise and normal daily activities. Inactivity and sedentary lifestyle means you don’t burn as many calories. The excess energy is stored as fat in the body.
Eating Habits and unhealthy eating habit is another contributor. Having more calories than you burn, consuming foods high in calories including fast food and high calorie beverages can naturally lead to weight gain.
Sleep deprivation can also cause changes in hormones that increase ones appetite.
Likewise, genetic factors also play a role and can determine if you are more likely to have this condition.
Why treatment is necessary?
Obesity is a complex disorder and not just a cosmetic concern for the reason that it increases the risk of diseases and many health problems such as cardiac diseases (heart problems), hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes etc. The conditions related can affect the quality of life. Common weight related issues that affect the quality of life include depression, disability, social isolation, shame, sexual problems, lower work productivity, etc. With obesity you may not be able to participate in enjoyable activities or things you used to do.
Unhealthy weight gain can be prevented. Some steps include:
- Regular exercise and having a plan of moderate intense physical activity, eg. swmimming or walking.
- A healthy diet focusing on low calorie foods, limited snacks, having foods rich in nutrients.
- Monitoring weight at regular intervals.
