What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric Surgery is a surgery performed for weight loss on people suffering from obesity. Bariatric Surgery is a weight loss procedure and is also known as weight loss surgery. Obesity has adverse health effects and is considered a serious medical condition and hence the need to be treated. Diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, obstructive sleep apnea, etc are some of the medical issues associated with obesity. Bariatric surgery restricts food intake and reduces food absorption from stomach and intestine. Thus overall body weight reduction is achieved and helps improve associated medical disorders that result from excess body weight.
When is Bariatric Surgery indicated?
Surgery is indicated:
- In patients with BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater. BMI is an approximate measure of a person’s body fat based on height and weight.
- In patients suffering with obesity-related medical conditions. Eg: Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc
Bariatric Surgery is indicated in patients with BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater.
Types of Bariatric Surgery
Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
In Sleeve Gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced to about 15% of the original size of the stomach. This reduced food intake. The portion of the stomach which secretes the “hunger hormone ” or Ghrelin is the part which is removed.
Gastric Bypass Surgery – Roux-en-Y
In Gastric Bypass Surgery or Roux-en-Y, the stomach is divided into two. A small upper pouch and a large lower pouch. The small intestine is then reattached to the upper pouch. Thus a bypass for food is created. This results in absorption of less calories and nutrients.
Intragastric Balloon Placement
This is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. A deflated balloon is placed into the stomach using an endoscope orally. The balloon is then inflated. This reduces the space in the stomach. Thus due to the presence of the inflated balloon in the stomach, food intake is restricted. The balloon is left in the stomach for a period of up to 6 months. This procedure is mostly advised in people who come into the category of overweight, but not obese.
Other Cosmetic / Body Shaping Procedures
These procedures doesn’t come under Bariatric Surgery, but are cosmetic body shaping procedures or fat removal surgeries.
Tummy Tuck Surgery / Abdominoplasty
Tummy Tuck, also called Abdominoplasty, is performed on people with hanging abdomen. Tummy tuck improves the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening the abdominal wall muscle.
This is a cosmetic procedure to remove unwanted fat in the body. This uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body such as hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, neck, arms etc. It is usually done on people who has a stable body weight, but has too much body fat in specific areas of the body.
