In Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, the stomach is reduced laparoscopically to about 15% of the original stomach size. The portion of the stomach which secretes the “hunger hormone” or Ghrelin is removed. This reduces the intake of food aiding in weight loss.
In Gastric Bypass Surgery or Roux-en-Y, the stomach is divided into two. A small upper pouch and a large lower pouch. The small intestine is then reattached to the upper pouch. Thus a bypass for food is created. This results in absorption of less calories and nutrients.
